The check

Open your listing, then answer as you look.

Search for your business the way a customer would. Keep that tab open and answer each question with what you see.

Open my listing on Google
  1. When you search your business name and town, does your business profile show (on the right on a computer, at the top on a phone)?

A box with your name, a map, hours and reviews.

Create or claim your Google Business Profile and verify it. Without it you don't show on Google Maps at all.

  2. Is the main category exact, for example "Hair salon" rather than "Store"?

It shows under your business name.

Set the most exact main category, then add one or two secondary ones. It decides which searches you appear in.

  3. Are the opening hours right, including holiday hours?

Check today's hours and the next public holiday.

Correct your hours and add holiday hours, so nobody turns up to a closed door or skips you because you look closed.

  4. Do the phone number and the website or booking link work when you tap them?

    Try both from your phone.

Fix the phone number and add a working website or booking link. Many people decide from this box alone.

  5. Are there at least 10 photos, with one from the last 3 months?

Tap "Photos" on the profile and check the dates.

Add 10 or more real photos: the front, the inside, your work and the team. Then add one new photo a month.

  6. Do you have at least 10 Google reviews?

The number shows next to the stars.

Ask happy customers for a review with a short link after each visit. Never buy reviews or swap them; Google removes them.

  7. Do you reply to reviews, including the bad ones?

Your replies show under each review as "Response from the owner".

Reply to every review within a few days, politely and in your own words. New customers read the replies too.

  8. Are your services or products listed, ideally with a starting price?

Look for "Services" or "Products" on the profile.

List your main services with a short description and a starting price, in the words customers search for.

  9. Have you posted an update, an offer or a photo in the last 30 days?

Updates show in a "From the owner" section.

Post one short update or photo a month. It shows customers the business is open and active.

What Google looks at

Relevance, distance and prominence.

Google's own help page names three things behind local results. You can't change distance, but you can work on the other two.

What Google says helps
  • Complete and accurate information: category, hours, phone, website
  • A verified profile with correct opening hours
  • Reviews, and replies to them
  • Photos that show the place and the work
What doesn't help
  • Paying Google: Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking
  • Keywords stuffed into the business name, which breaks Google's rules
  • Bought or swapped reviews, which Google removes
  • Anyone who promises the first place
FAQ

Questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Ask us. George replies personally.

Is it really free?

Yes. The check is free and needs no sign-up. If you send us your result, we reply with what to fix first, also free.

Do you see what I type?

No. The check runs in your browser. We only see your result if you press "Send my result to George" and send the form, or send it on WhatsApp.

Does a score of 100 mean I'm first on Google?

No. Distance from the person searching matters too, and nobody controls that. A complete, active profile gives you the best chance in the searches you're relevant for.

Can you fix it for me?

Yes. Google visibility is a one-off service from €190: we set up or correct the profile, categories, hours, services and photos, and give you a review link. Monthly care is optional.
